Wind turbines are generally designed and certified for a specific design lifetime (20 – 25 years), during which they are carefully managed and maintained. It is important to have a plan for what will happen to these facilities when their (useful) life has come to a close. It is to be expected that a longer economic lifetime can help to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). However, operators need to investigate the economic case project by project, as conditions may vary considerably.
