An international research consortium intends to demonstrate the technical and financial feasibility of floating wind turbines. Scientists and companies from Germany, France, Spain, Great Britain, Norway and Belgium are working together on the FLOATGEN project (Demonstration of Two Floating Wind Turbine Systems for Power Generation in Southern European Deep Waters). The project, jointly owned by Dong Energy, Masdar and E.ON, announced that the first 630 MW phase of the offshore wind farm in the Thames estuary is completed. Last year, the German offshore wind farm alpha ventus fed 267.8 GWh of electricity into the transmission grid. This means that the energy yield exceeded the original forecast by 15.3%, says the operator consortium DOTI. The positive earnings trend is expected to continue in the first quarter of 2013. Read more
