BSH publishes grid plan for the North Sea

The February, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has presented the "Federal Plan for Offshore in the North Sea", the grid plan for Germany. It substantiates and complements the maritime spatial planning around the power grids.

The planned and approved German wind farms within a maximum distance of 120 km from the coast are grouped into 13 clusters in the North Sea grid plan. The plan outlines routes for connecting cables of the wind farms, sites for converter and transformer platforms, tracks for cross-border electricity interconnections and transfer points between the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and territorial sea. According to the plan, the connection of the wind farms will require 25 converter platforms and around 3,880 km of submarine cable by 2030.

"With the 'Federal Plan for Offshore in the North Sea', the BSH has produced the world's first systematic power grid plan for the offshore area in a record period of ten months," said Monika Breuch-Moritz, president of BSH. This guarantees liability, legal certainty and a reliable basis for planning for each approval process. The power grid capacities have been defined so that the energy policies of the German federal government could in principle be achieved by 2030, says Breuch-Moritz.

Thus a standard system power of 900 MW is defined for each substation. The cable systems also have a transmission capacity of 900 MW at a voltage level of 320 KV. This should enable them to connect the various substations with each other in the future - in order to prevent possible failures.

The definition of cable routes and substations was preceded by a comprehensive environmental study. This ensures that the interests of users are balanced with the protection of the environment, according to the BSH.

The first of a number of transformers that will enable the transmission of renewable energy from the world’s largest offshore wind farm has been delivered. The transformers will play an integral role in the operation of three onshore convertor stations in East Riding of Yorkshire and on Teesside, that will eventually convert the current from the wind farm for transmission via the national grid network to 6 million UK homes.
