Gwynt y Môr forges ahead

The first of 160 steel foundations for the offshore wind farm Gwynt y Môr off the north Wales coast have been erected and the first export cable is currently being laid near Pensarn. Furthermore, the first of two offshore substations set sail for Liverpool Bay in mid August after being designed and built by Siemens in Manchester and Harland and Wolff in Belfast.

RWE npower renewables’ Gwynt y Môr Project Director, Toby Edmonds, explained: “The first foundation was installed using the heavy lift vessel Stanislav Yudin in a specified depth of 23.2 metres. We are delighted with this very successful first installation, which marks a next crucial stage of the two year construction period of this flagship wind farm, which began with the installation of scour protection in January.”

Each wind turbine foundation at Gwynt y Môr consists of a steel monopile, between 60 and 70 metres long and 6 and 7 metres wide, a yellow transition piece and access platform. Sets of foundations will be transported to the installation vessel by barge from Gwynt y Môr’s base harbour port facility on the banks of the River Mersey in Birkenhead.

At 576 MW, Gwynt y Môr is one of the largest offshore wind farms currently under construction in Europe. It is a shared investment between partners RWE Innogy, Stadtwerke München GmbH and Siemens.

The HLC (Heavy Lift Crane) 295000 is on board the “Orion”, the next generation offshore installation vessel by DEME. Being the largest crane Liebherr has ever built, it has a maximum lifting capacity of 5,000 Tonnes. Its working field will be the offshore industry, in which it will help installing wind farms and decommissioning “old” energy platforms.

The energy company Vattenfall has selected Dewesoft to provide the tower monitoring solution at what will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

Rostock-based company EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH has received an order from the Swedish energy group Vattenfall to produce 41 monopiles for the 344 MW offshore wind
farms Vesterhav. The contract was signed on 19 November 2021.
