SylWin1 has been delayed

Siemens is facing further delays in their offshore wind business. The grid connection project SylWin1 has been delayed all in all for about a year, because they hit an unexpected soft substrate layer underground.

The substation SylWin1 will be built about 70 km west of Sylt. The wind farm DanTysk, which is already under construction, will be connected to it. Recent soil surveys have now discovered a soft substrate layer at the installation site of the substation – "totally unexpected", as Siemens announced. This now makes it necessary to anchor the substructure much more deeply in the silt. The piles, which weigh several tonnes apiece, now have to be driven 106 m into the ground, instead of 70 m, according to Siemens. This adds to the costs for installation and the new ground anchors also have a longer delivery time.

This means that Siemens will, at best, be able to install the substructure in 2013, probably between August and September. The actual platform will be placed on top in 2014, which will delay the final completion until the end of 2014 – a year later than originally planned.

According to a spokesperson, Siemens is still evaluating how expensive this delay will be. Siemens already had to fork over € 22 million in the last fiscal year, due to delays of several months. As recently as the end of January, CFO Joe Kaeser had warned that "small additional costs" were "repeatedly" to be expected in connection with North Sea projects. Above all, he knew this from experience, because already in 2011/2012 the additional costs for the four offshore connection projects added up to € 570 million. In the first quarter of 2012/13, € 28 million were added to that.
